Aim and Effect of This Orchestration

This orchestration was inspired by the gorgeous sound of the organ ringing an octave higher in the recording of the piece conducted by Mascagni himself.

The trumpet and piccolo are layered in octaves to create a very organ-like sound.

In the Cilento International Music Festival 2025, a smaller ensemble version but used trumpet same way, helped me win the Audience Award in the Conducting category.

Notes

This score does not include all parts. Because the nuances of the string parts are so different between Mascagni's piano sketch (which can be found at the beginning of opera score of the Bote & Bock edition), manuscript of the opera score, Sonzogno edition (first edition), Parts of the Sonzogno edition, and the Bote & Bock edition.

Each has its merits and are fascinating. I have refrained from presenting my version here like the definitive version.

You can use this parts set by adjusting the nuances as appropriate to suit your interpretation.
